THEATRE
& POSTER
Selection from the holdings of the Theatre History Collection of the National
Széchényi Library
Gyula Castle Theatre, 2002
There are rare moments when a really good theatre poster calls the attention of a passerby from the great mass of commercial printed products appearing in the streets; an attractive image which rises the interest for going to theatre, to see the performance, even inspires to buy the ticket. It can be real means of publicity for theatres and their performances and the whole community around the theatre. It was nearly thirty years ago when the public could see the best theatre posters of Hungarian graphic art from the first half of the 20th century at the National Gallery in 1976. Our selection compiled for the show at Gyula introduces the best items of the collection from the 1950s up to the present. A theatre poster reflects the leading idea of the play picturing an artistic impression, a kind of illustration of important thoughts in association with the playtitle and the plot for the performance, but it also can be a work of art for the future. Maybe this is the reason why many times the set designers of the performances also produce posters beside our outstanding graphic artists. Set designers like Árpád Kemény and János Mira were creators of both the visuality of theatre performances and the related posters. Graphic artist István Orosz also worked as the stage designer in the production of Mihail Solohov’s And Quiet Flows the Don staged at the theatre of Kecskemét. In the mid-1980s the forming theatrical company of Eger was searching for young high school students for designing work; György Kovács and his colleagues at the graphic workshop of the theatre studied drawing and graphic art there at that time.
