NSZL welcomes the special anniversary year commemorating 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare by opening a chamber exhibition entitled “Shakespeare’s Heroes” at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday July 7, 2016.
“In 2016 the world commemorates 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare, the greatest figure of playwriting in English and the best known playwright of the world. Shakespeare was one of the few authors who could create works of art of eternal value both in the categories of comedy and tragedy. Even four centuries could not diminish the vitality of his dramas.
Shakespeare’s heroes live with us. Not only in theaters but also in film adaptations placed in a modern environment or in everyday life. We keep on quoting his words when contemplating about the hardships of life: “To be or not to be”. They are referred to when embracing couples are compared to Romeo and Juliet, being unaware of the bad luck these words can predict for lovers.
What makes Shakespeare’s figures immortal? Why have all the generations looked up to these heroes for four centuries? Maybe because Shakespeare’s heroes are flesh and blood people and, in spite of their circumstances and turns of fate, they remain the same: people in whom we can recognize ourselves even from the distance of four centuries.” (Ágnes Bessenyei)
