Upper/lower case
Normally, search terms can be input in upper or lower case. However, most codes (e.g. language of item) must be in lower case.
Library symbols must be in UPPERCASE.
Truncation
If you have set truncation equal to 1 (right truncation) on your Z39.50 client, do not include the "?" in the search term. TIP: Set the truncation attribute to 101 (truncation anywhere in term) and include the wildcard symbol or the question mark in your search term. The wildcard symbol (#) represents a single character. The question mark (?) represents 0 or more characters.
Punctuation
Punctuation in a term is ignored.
Names
For most names enter surname and then forename. Example: Name = "masters olga" or "arany jános"
For conference and corporate names, enter the names in direct order. Example: Corporate name = Magyar Nemzeti Bank
If the order of words in a name is unknown, try a Boolean search by keywords in the name.
Titles
Exclude initial articles when searching by title. When selecting a title from a browse list, remove any initial articles in your query. Example: Title = english patient (not The english patient)
Subjects
Use two hyphens before subdivisions. Example: Subject = jazz--brazil
Boolean Search
You can combine two or more terms with a Boolean operator to broaden or narrow a search. As NEKTÁR is a large database use care in broadening; avoid general terms (such as "australia") and prefer keyword phrases to single keywords.
Narrowing a Search
The complete list of codes can be found in MARC 21 documentation
You can narrow a search with the attributes below. To avoid slow response times and unwanted hits, do not search with them on their own.
Date/Date of publication
Set the Structure attribute to "year" and Relation to an appropriate value such as "equal" or "less than".
Geographic area codes
Enter the coded values for the place in lowercase. Examples: Use "e" for Europe, "e-hu" for Hungary, "e-it" for Italy. Use "u" for Australasia, "u-at" for Australia, "u-at-qn" for Queensland
Holdings library symbol codes
Enter the symbol in UPPERCASE. To find a symbol, check the "Könyvtárkódok feloldása" web page. Example: Use "B1" for items held in the National Széchényi Library
Language codes
Enter in lowercase one or more codes. Example: To find works in Hungarian, use "hun"; to find works in French, use "fre"; etc.
Keywords
NEKTÁR supports keyword searching of names, titles, subjects, notes and publisher names. To search by keyword, set the following attributes:
Position = any position in field Completeness = incomplete subfield
Structure = phrase OR single word
You may combine keywords and exact terms in a query. Example: To find "A tomszki hadifoglyok mozgalma, 1916-1920" by Kelemen Andor, you could enter the title keywords "tomszki" and "mozgalma" and name exact "Kelemen Andor" (Please note: if you search for keywords than you have to write every word in a different field)
Stopwords
NEKTÁR do not have stop words.
Character set
Search terms are assumed to use the UNICODE character set encoded in UTF-8. Diacritics are ignored in searching. The character conversion rules are identical for processing the search term and for generating NEKTÁR indexes. These rules practically mean that if you are able to enter valid UTF-8 characters, they can be used in search terms, but you can always use just the the base characters too. Example: If your Z39.50 client software has an UTF-8 coded form for entering search terms, both of these search terms "Petőfi" and "Petofi" will have the same results.
