An extra large, openable Advent calendar, a slide strip snug and small presents will wait for those who visit National Széchényi Library during the Advent period. An exhibition entitled Our 20th Century Christmases – Advent Panorama presents how festive customs had been forming during the World Wars, periods of crisis and political changes, from a cultural and social historical perspective.
A selection of Christmas-related slide film objects can be seen at the exhibition, coming complete with postcards, posters and personal Christmas photos of the Library staff. The exhibited items, including old presents, toys and period specialties, are presented on the walls according to different decades.
Exhibition spaces are connected by rows of objects, old folders and pairs of shoes containing small presents. The shoes and boots have been donated by staff members of National Széchényi Library, and when the exhibition is dismantled, these items will be forwarded to children in need.
Projections of the exhibited slide films will be held regularly (every weekday, starting at 3 p.m.). Taking part in the projections is free, but preliminary registration will be required.
You can register to the event at the following address: csoportvezetes@oszk.hu.
The exhibition will be open from December 4, 2019 until January 10, 2020, Tuesday to Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The Library will be closed between December 23, 2019 and January 1, 2020; in this period, no visitors will be admitted to the exhibitions either.
