On Wednesday April 15, 2015, Turkish book illustrator and ebru master Ahmet Sacit Açıkgözoğlu will deliver an exclusive lecture on Turkish handicraft book illustrating techniques in National Széchényi Library. Ebru master Ahmet Sacit Açıkgözoğlu started dealing with calligraphy in 1995, and in 1998 he took up ebru (marbling) painting. Currently, he works for the Art History Faculty of Marmara University and also teaches traditional Turkish art at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He had several exhibitions based on the topic of classic ebru in Turkey, the United Kingdom as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Program:

10:30 – 12:00 a.m.: Lecture about Ottoman book art and about four different branches of art.

Binding of books by traditional technique and illustrating them with ebru and leather. Topics of the ebru master’s lecture include, first of all, the traditions of Ottoman bookbinding different from the techniques used in Europe (for example, miklep, sertap), as familiar features of the binding of books;

Ahmet Sacit Açıkgözoğlu will also talk about the making of kubur, the name standing for cylindrical storage boxes. These boxes were covered by ebru and leather and they might have been used for the storage of stationery;

Murakka: the use of ribbons cut out of zemin and battal ebrus and placed around calligraphy or miniatures;

Akkase: using a special ebru technique, by way of which paper is repeatedly dipped and making calligraphy, miniatures and floral motifs.

Venue: National Széchényi Library, Floor 6, Ceremonial Hall
The event is closely related to an exhibition launched by Budapest-based Yunus Emre Institute.
