This volume by Eszter Kovács not only explores the Catholic (and Jesuit) aspects of the Czech-Hungarian relations in the 16th and 17th centuries, but also contributes to the more precise elaboration of the overall cultural history of that period with a comprehensive and many-sided research.
The author discovers and organizes, inspires to further research, and aims the results achieved at the shaping of public knowledge. The academic research of the Czech-Hungarian Jesuit relations started within the Bohemistic Studies course at the Slavistics Institute of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, and then, during the work at the Early Hungarian Printed Books workshop at National Széchényi Library it became a mature source material not only for the history of the Church and the Jesuit order, but also to history in general and other related disciplines. Its Hungarian aspect, with the Slovak ethnical region included, is an inspiring material for any complex study of the system of cultural relations within the Hungarian-Slovak-Czech triangle.
Nearly all chapters of this work call for further monographs, especially those regarding the Hungarian Gergely Rumer as Provincial in Bohemia, the cult of our common saints, the thematic analysis of school dramas, and last but not least, the relation of the Hungarian Jesuits with the Czech language.
